UNAHOTELS San Vitale Bologna - thanks to the building's environmental compatibility - has been certified in accordance with the LEED 2009 Italy New Construction and Major Renovations protocol and obtained Gold Certified March 2015 certification. Since its construction, the hotel has set out to make sustainability and energy saving its goal: the building in which the hotel is located has a strong focus on the value of environmental sustainability; it is in energy class A and has obtained LEED Gold certification thanks to several green technical features, such as the high-performance façade system, the use of photovoltaic and solar thermal panels, the use of recycled and locally sourced materials, the optimisation of lighting, the use of drinking water for irrigation and sanitary purposes for maximum efficiency, and separate waste collection for recycling in every designed space.

 

LEED is a rating system for the development of “green” buildings.

LEED standards specify the requirements for constructing environmentally compatible buildings that can “function” sustainably in terms of energy.

Through the LEED system, a series of measurable requirements are set - from energy consumption to indoor environmental quality - that establish the level of environmental compatibility of buildings.

This identifies and outlines best practices for engineers, architects, professionals and the whole community in the industry, which become benchmarks for third-party certification.

 

LEED opts for a holistic view of sustainability, based on the concept of the Integrated Project, which means an approach that integrates

•             Systems

•             Commercial structures

•             Performance practices as part of a process that utilises the talents, knowledge and insight of all participants in the project in a collaborative way in order to optimise results, increase the value of the project, reduce consumption, maximise efficiency across all the design, manufacture and construction phases.

 

LEED is an assessment system that works by assigning a score relating to the attainment of “Credits” in the various fields of sustainability. A credit can be gained if the design and/or construction meet the specific requirements that the credit calls for. 

The LEED process is divided into two credit submission stages: Design - once the design decision stage is completed; Construction - once the construction site is finished and all tests have been performed.

 

There are four LEED certification levels depending on the score reached

  • CERTIFIED
  • SILVER
  • GOLD
  • PLATINUM

 

The sustainability areas that LEED uses to assess buildings are:

  • Sustainable sites (SS)
  • Water Efficiency (WE)
  • Energy and Atmosphere (EA)
  • Materials and Resources (MR)
  • Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ)
  • Innovation (I)

 

The organisation that establishes the LEED standard is the U.S. Green Building Council.
